Breaking News: huge peatland discovered in remote part of Congo-Brazzaville

Current field work in the Congo basin has uncovered a vast peatland. The size of the peat bog is estimated in the range of  100,000 - 200,000 square kilometers (40,000 - 80,000 sq miles), with the peat-layer reaching up to 7m beneath the ground.

The fieldwork brings together the efforts of the Wildlife Conservation Society-Congo, Congo Brazzaville's Marien Ngouabi University and the University of Leeds. PhD student Greta Dargie remains in the field co-ordinating the remaining fieldwork.
